Miserable happiness

On one palm, a smiley face, and on the other, a frowning face.
MonaLisa as a concept

“It brings me joy!” A top tier comedic exclamation from a man. A man so full of said joy, he was basically brimming with happiness, always at the brink of happy tears.

Happiness. Deep down, he was miserable. Everyone laughed with him, but he felt like they laughed at him instead. They all assumed his tears were of joy, but they were not. Rather, each tear drop was one of astonishing sorrow, only getting harsher as time passed.

What happened? Why was that happy man a miserable man?

What did he do for fun? How often did he get to have fun? Perhaps he didn’t at all, and that one exclamation was the only layer of fun in his life. Who knows? Exactly! Nobody knows. Nobody bothered to ask him if it were real, if he was truly joyful. Or asked what he did for fun. Worst of all, no one asked if his tears wear happy ones, or miserly.

Would someone — anyone — ever ask him? Would he be honest? If he were honest, that Good Samaritan would say, “the waking moments of your life are ever so precious, so engage, engage with yourself inside and out, with people, with nature, with God and the universe, push yourself to be a part of the life you live; it will be worth it.”

After all, misery and joy must coexist because for every push there’s an alternate pull. But that’s what life is, isn’t it? Day and night, winter and summer, the dry season and the wet (rainy) season, war for peace and peace then war, chaos and order,… push and pull.

Hopefully, the miserable happy man will accept the helping hand and embrace the balancing act that life is.
